The Catalyst – Chemistry Resources for the Secondary Education Teacher on the WWW
This resource is for the lowest stage of literacy development. It has clear definitions for a number of key terms. Like most sites it has links to follow to other useful information including more (and higher) literacy development as well as material on the non-literary aspects of chemistry and the teaching thereof.
This site has a video about most of the known chemical elements.
This site has excellent directions as to how one keeps a lab notebook. The literacy focus is on explaining a procedure. This represents a higher literacy development than the vocabulary site above. It is a good dedicated synopsis. The parent site, Angelfire, is simply a commercial web hosting service – the page is here because it is free to post on the world wide web.

This is a free online magazine targeted to high school chemistry students. The reading relates chemistry to life. It is 100% literary and develops reading and elementary research skills. The publication is issued and the site is hosted by the American Chemical Society.
Institute for Chemistry Literacy through Computational Science
This link goes to the resource page which lists increasing numbers of technological applications to improve literacy in chemistry. The page is on a site dedicated to using computational chemistry to increase chemical literacy in education. The technology allows the learner to link vocabulary and conceptual definitions to models and graphic representations of chemical properties and phenomena.
International Journal for Philosophy of Chemistry
Here is more advanced reading on the relevance of chemistry to life and society. The literacy development offers linkages to subjects related to but outside the scope of high school chemistry. This material offers enrichment for the gifted and talented student.
